What is answer engine optimization, and does it replace SEO?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your content cited in AI-generated answers, in tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, rather than only ranking in a list of links. It does not replace SEO. It shares most of its foundations with SEO and changes what counts as a win: being quoted rather than being clicked.
What changed
Search used to end with a list of links, and the goal was to be in it. Increasingly it ends with a written answer, and a user who gets what they needed may never click anything. If your content is the source of that answer, you get attribution and often a citation link. If it is not, the traffic simply does not arrive.
The terms AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) are used more or less interchangeably for this.
What it has in common with SEO
Crawlable pages, clean structure, fast loading, sensible internal linking, and content that genuinely answers a question. An AI engine cannot cite a page it cannot read, and most of the technical groundwork is identical.
What is different
Answer-first writing. A page that buries its conclusion under four paragraphs of preamble is hard to quote. Putting the direct answer in the opening lines makes a page extractable.
Specificity. Models cite concrete, checkable claims more readily than general advice. Numbers, named mechanisms and clear comparisons get quoted; adjectives do not.
Self-contained sections. If a section only makes sense after reading the three above it, it cannot be lifted out as an answer.
What it means for measurement
Citations are harder to track than rankings. Referral traffic from AI tools is visible in analytics but understates the effect, because a user who read your answer inside the chat and then searched your brand directly shows up as direct traffic.
The practical approach is to watch branded search volume and direct traffic alongside citations, and accept that attribution here is rougher than it was.
Does it replace SEO
No. It is a shift in what you optimise the content for, running on the same technical foundation. A site with broken crawling will fail at both.
